Faculty Mentor: Dr. Joscelyn Varland
Dr. Joscelyn Varland is the Academic Fieldwork Coordinator and an Assistant Professor at the University of Mary's Occupational Therapy Program. Her clinical experience includes working with patients in acute care, long-term care and outpatient therapy settings.
Dr. Varland and I had the opportunity to meet a few different times throughout the year. Because I am an education student, my access to the occupational department at this point in my academic career is limited. These experiences allowed me the opportunity to get to know the Occupational Therapy staff at Mary. Dr. Varland and I primarily discussed my aspirations as an OT student, the program requirements, and my academic expectations. We also discussed the school's progressive program and its future remodel. It was so interesting. We also just talked about life and work. It was great to hear her personal experiences in the field. It gave me an idea of what to expect as I finish my education journey and venture into occupational therapy school. |
Professional Mentor: Alexandra Winters

Alexandra has experience in adult acute care, with the pediatric population, and in adult rehab. Alexandra has worked with children of all ages, from birth through adolescents, for over six years. She is now currently employed in Bismarck at Pediatric Therapy Partners.
Ms. Winters and I had the opportunity to meet on a variety of different occasions throughout the last semester. Through these experiences, I had the opportunity to observe multiple pediatric occupational therapy sessions. These were very eye-opening. I loved being able to witness and work with these students. It was a great reminder that all the hard work I am putting in now will one day be worth it. In addition to the session learning opportunities, Ms. Winters and I also had the chance to meet up several times outside of the office. This was the perfect time for us to get to know one another, discuss school and work life, and hang out. All in all, I had an amazing experience with Ms. Winters. She is truly an amazing person and an even better leader & professional. We connected immediately, and I look forward to working with her in the future. |
